What exam boards do you cover?
Unless otherwise stated, the skills taught in these Masterclasses are suitable for all IGSCE| GCSE English exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas.
Text-specific sessions are designed around the requirements of the relevant exam board and set text. For example, the Power and Conflict Poetry Masterclass is specifically designed for AQA students studying the Power and Conflict Anthology.
Please check each Masterclass description before booking to ensure it matches your child's course.
What is regular one-to-one tuition?
Our regular one-to-one tuition is our most bespoke and individualised option.
Your child is matched with a member of the HWL Expert Tuition Network and receives regular individual lessons tailored to their:
- exam board and specification
- current working level
- individual strengths and areas for development
- set Literature texts
- school assessments and mock examinations
- personal targets
Because the entire session is dedicated to one student, the tutor can adapt the pace, content and level of challenge specifically to your child.
Who is it best for?This is the best option for students who need consistent, individual support, particularly if they have significant gaps, need to work closely to the requirements of a particular exam board or want regular support with both Language and Literature.
What are the GCSE & IGCSE English Language Groups?
Our English Language Groups provide regular weekly tuition with a qualified English teacher in a small-group environment.
The focus is on the core reading and writing skills students need to succeed in GCSE and IGCSE English Language, rather than teaching one particular examination specification.
Students work on skills such as:
- analysing writers' methods
- understanding and responding to texts
- comparing ideas and perspectives
- structure
- creative and transactional writing
- vocabulary
- planning and developing responses
- exam technique
Are the groups exam-board specific?No. The groups deliberately focus on the transferable English Language skills that underpin the major GCSE and IGCSE specifications.
Where appropriate, teachers will help students understand how those skills relate to their own examinations, but the group itself is not designed to teach one particular exam paper or specification.
If your child requires highly individualised teaching focused exclusively on their own exam board, one-to-one tuition would be more appropriate.
Do the Language Groups cover Literature?No. These groups focus on English Language.
Because schools study different combinations of Literature texts, we don't try to teach individual set texts within the regular Language groups. For Literature support, our Literature Clinics or one-to-one tuition may be more appropriate.
What is the GCSE & IGCSE English Literature Clinic with Hayley?
The Literature Clinic provides flexible, targeted Literature support in a very small group of no more than four students.
Unlike a traditional Literature group, students do not need to be studying the same text.
Your child might bring:
- an essay they've been working on at school
- a particular text, character or theme
- a question they're struggling with
- teacher feedback they don't know how to act upon
- an upcoming assessment
- an area of Literature they would like to improve
Alternatively, you can let Hayley know in advance what your child needs help with and appropriate work can be prepared for the session.
How can students studying different texts work together?Students have their own purposeful tasks and work on live documents that Hayley can monitor during the session.
Hayley works individually with students on their particular needs, while the other students continue with their independent work.
Where students share a common area of difficulty, such as developing analysis, structuring an essay or using quotations effectively, Hayley can bring the group together to teach that transferable skill.
Is the support relevant to my child's exam board?Yes. When Hayley is working with your child on their individual text, question or difficulty, the guidance will be relevant to their particular exam board. Shared teaching focuses on skills that can be applied across different specifications.
If you want an entire lesson dedicated exclusively to your child's individual exam board, text and needs, one-to-one tuition is the better option.
Do we have to attend every Literature Clinic?No. That's one of the main advantages.
Literature Clinics are completely flexible and ad hoc. There is no weekly commitment. You simply book a place when your child needs some additional Literature support.

My child needs tuition in other subjects. Can you offer this?
Yes. The HWL Expert Tuition Network provides support across a variety of subjects in Key Stages 2, 3, 4 and 5, including English, Maths and Science.
We also have specialists available in 11+ preparation.
Most of our tuition is delivered online, although we also offer face-to-face English and Maths tuition in South Derbyshire.
