Monday 7th July 2025 - The changing face of Tuition

From side hustle to lifeline

It’s amazing to reflect on how tuition has changed over the years—and how I’ve changed with it. As many of you know, I followed a fairly traditional path: English teacher, Assistant Curriculum Leader, Director of English. Tutoring was something I did on the side—originally just to cover the extras, support the family finances, and help fund my daughter’s private school education (and that was before the 20% VAT was introduced on fees!). That extra income was always welcome, but more than that, I loved the connection I formed with parents and students on a one-to-one basis. I also found it fascinating to gain insight into what was happening in other schools.

Tutoring before Zoom

Back then, tutoring meant driving around with a boot full of resources. I had up to seven students on a housing estate in a nearby city and would go door to door. Others would come to my house and sit at the dining room table on a Saturday morning.

A pandemic pivot

Then came Covid, and everything changed. Overnight, tuition moved online—and when I made the decision to leave the classroom in 2022 and run my own business full-time, I adopted a hybrid model. Some students still came to me in person, but many sessions took place online.  Now, I’m 100% online.

The rise of flexibility

Until recently, my week was split between international students during the day (7 a.m. in Dubai on a Saturday!) and UK-based students after school. But I’ve noticed a shift: after-school sessions have become increasingly difficult for families to commit to. Students are incredibly busy with clubs, hobbies, and other enriching activities—great for their mindset and physical health, but it makes regular weekly tutoring hard to schedule.

Introducing the Platinum Package

This academic year, I’ve seen a rise in families opting for a more flexible approach. Many students join my focused masterclasses each half term, which are tailored to specific exam skills or set texts. Then they dip in and out of one-to-one sessions during the holidays. That’s exactly why I created my Platinum Package—designed with busy parents and busy students in mind.

One Focused Hour, Big Results

It doesn’t rely on a weekly commitment, but it offers the reassurance that there’s expert support available throughout the year. A lot can be achieved in a focused one-hour session, especially when it's well timed. Parents know they’ve got someone to turn to, and students stay on track—without sacrificing their existing commitments.

Leading a Growing Network

And if I’m honest, as my business has grown, so has my role. I now spend a significant amount of time running the business itself, supporting a growing network of expert tutors across a range of subjects. While I still tutor personally, my time is precious—and I need to focus on the bigger picture, ensuring every family that works with us receives a high standard of care and expertise.

Evolving with the Times

Yes—tuition is definitely changing. And I’m proud to be changing with it.
